Every business needs to let people know what it sells. That is marketing. Digital marketing is simply the same thing, done through the internet, social media and mobile phones, where your customers now spend much of their time.
Why so many small businesses hesitate
In Ziguinchor as elsewhere, many shopkeepers, craftspeople and schools do not use it. Two reasons come up again and again:
- they do not see what it could do for them;
- they think it is expensive and complicated, only for large companies.
Both ideas are wrong. Digital marketing can cost less than an ordinary running expense, and its first tools are free.
Your strength: being close by
A small business has an advantage large ones do not: its customers are right next door. Yet many people in the neighbourhood do not know what you offer, your opening hours or your prices. When they look for a service on their phone, the first business they find wins the sale.
Where to start, in four steps
- WhatsApp Business: a professional profile with your hours, your address and a catalogue of your products. It is free, and your customers already use it.
- A Google listing (Google Business Profile): it puts you on the map when someone searches for your trade nearby. Also free.
- A Facebook or Instagram page updated regularly: photos of your products, new arrivals, customer reviews. Consistency matters more than volume.
- A website: it reassures customers, banks and partners, and it belongs to you, unlike a social media page.
The right habit: start small, but be consistent. One post a week for a year is worth more than ten posts in the first week and then nothing.
What comes next?
Once these basics are in place, you can measure what works: how many messages you receive, how many visits, which products attract the most interest. That is when digital marketing becomes a real lever to grow your revenue.
